Phrases For A New Millenium

Basically this page is all about moving on in this millenium and setting some ground rules, and new phrases. Inspired by Douglas Coupland's "Generation X". Enjoy, I'll add more every now and again.

Technological Unshackling- the realisation that one does not have to rely on modern technology to get by in life.

Textophobe- a person who is inherently terrified of mobile phones, usually thanks to news reports indicting them as a cause of cancer.

Nostradamus Complex- the fear that since the turn of the millenium, the world could end any day now. Usually coupled with dreams involving nuclear war and being caught in the explosion.

Big Bang Complex- general fear of nuclear war.

Slippery Slope-ism- the belief of students that, after education, there will be nothing else in life for them to achieve or gain.

Generation X2-ers- the new breed of Generation X-ers, who live on a diet of musicians who rehash old ideas, Douglas Coupland novels and pasta-based products. Usually cynical and pessimistic.

Lunar Escapism- human being's tendency to spend hours gazing at the night sky, in search of some answer, or perhaps a huge stray lump of rock headed toward earth.

Compact Disc Protectionalism- the fear that someday a replacement for CDs will become popular and rid the world of commercially purchasable music. Replaced Tape Protectionalism.

Mobile Paranoia- the urge to check one's mobile phone every minute in case a call has been missed or a text has been received.

Pipe Cleansing- the need to let a tap run for a few seconds before filling a kettle, teapot or cup to make sure the water is fresh.

Multireliance- the belief that one's day will be free of obstacles thanks to a multivitamin tablet in the morning.

Working For Luxury- getting a steady job merely to gain enough money to take an easier, less strenuous job. This process can continue until a person ends up working down from accountancy, to banking, to door-to-door salesmanship to a bar worker in Palm Springs.

Paper Critique- heavily criticising others to hide one's own flaws and failures.

Possession Conflict- the understanding that one does not need all of the electronic goods, quirky furniture and overpriced luxuries that one owns, coupled with the inability to actually give it all up.

Scheming Dress Code- the art of dressing down merely to impress people.

Colourless City- a city that has become a mixture of history and modernity without trying to seperate the two: "Oh, look at that architecture, Arnie." "Barbara, are you going to stare at the roof all day or actually go into McDonald's?"

Minimalist Fantasia- the urge a minimalist gets to give in and just buy the glass-topped table and the set of knives based on that certain comedy show from the 80's.

Yearly Yearning- the wish that it was the previous year, even though things haven't changed: "Where did 2002 go? I miss the world tension and irrational government."
